Starfruit

Averrhoa carambola
Common Name – Starfruit
Starfruit
Native to Indonesia, Malaysia and India, Starfruit is well adapted to the Hawai’ian tropical climate. The starfruit can be found in farmer’s markets all over Hawai’i and is a favorite of chefs for its charming star shape. The fruit is lightly sweet with a mild tropical fruit flavor. Starfruit is perfect for jams, syrups, marinades cooked in with entrees and for garnishing your favorite dishes.
September through April
The Starfruit tree is quite beautiful and is even planted as an ornamental due to it’s dark green leaves and lovely blossoms.
Starfruit is sliced into cross sections to show off the unique star shape for salads and as a garnish. The skin is edible so no need to peel. For sauces and jellies the fruit can be cubed or pureed.
We love to include Starfruit in our homemade jams and fruit salad, but there are nearly endless uses for this versatile fruit.
Ripe Starfruit will be a yellow-ish orange with a thin stripe of vibrant green along the ridges. The green will disappear as it continues to ripen. Once the green is gone it should be consumed right away. Starfruit can be stored on the counter, but will ripen less quickly if stored in the refrigerator.
