Kalopa Makai Farms
Perched on the the fertile Hamakua coast, with a panoramic ocean view, is our little farm. Our goal with Kalopa Makai Farms was to practice sustainable small agriculture in the form of a modern homestead. Instead of a monoculture, like we see commonly in big agriculture, our goal is crop diversity as seen in the permaculture/agroforestry production model. In this system a diversity of crops are planted together creating a food forest. This method is in balance with nature, helps with pest management, improves soil quality and is the perfect model for feeding family and community.
Here is a partial list of the amazing wealth of plants and trees we grow on our land. We also produce a few crops to take to market. Presently these are coffee, dragonfruit, starfruit and white pineapple. Using these products we make soap, oil, jams, jellies and a variety of products from our Kalopa Makai kitchen.
