Medicinals, Lemongrass and Baby Goats

June 12, 2018October 10, 2018in Around the Farm

With the assistance of my daughter’s boyfriend, my husband finished the first of four raised beds for the medicinal garden. All of the plants I started by seed are doing well with the exception of both of the varieties of hyssop. I’m excited about putting them in the ground and getting this garden going.

I’m especially excited about the lemongrass. We’ve had lemongrass in the past, so this isn’t new to us, but it’s one of my favorite herbs. One of my friends brought me a bottle of lemongrass essential oil from a trip to Vietnam. I absolutely love the smell. I also enjoy cooking with it.

When I was researching herbs, lemongrass wasn’t on initially on my list. I thought of it as more as a culinary herb, but as I did research on herbs in general, I learned a lot more about this plant than I ever knew. Lemongrass has a variety of medicinal benefits. It has properties to help keep healthy cholesterol levels, it has diuretic properties, it has anti fungal properties, helps with insomnia, rheumatism, skin infections, it can be used as inspect repellant or a deodorant, it’s in shampoos … the list goes on. But the smell … this oil is used in aromatherapy because of its therapeutic effects, which help in revitalizing the body. I personally utilize the oil in a diffuser I have at work. The oil also has a cooling effect which is especially beneficial during hot weather. AND … the oil has astringent and toning qualities – hmmm, it helps tighten and lift sagging skin. Who knew??? Who is going to use this more??? ME!

Other happenings …

The goats! They’re so cute. We’ve been trying to get to know them more so they’ll be tamer around us. Clyde is definitely open to being friends, and has progressed to sitting on my lap for a bit. Bonnie still has her doubts about being friends, but today she ate out of my daughter’s hand for a bit. I think she’ll come around with some time.
